It’s been a while but since our last Features, so here is a special edition as we sat down with one of our favorite artists which is just want you need as you start thinking less about work and more about where you are going out tonight!
Corey Pieper (@corey_pieper) is rap artist, an incredible talent with a full range of tracks, including doing the lyrics, music and starring in the very first Rob the Rich video. He is a pursuing his dream of making music which has already taken him to some dope places and performing in front of thousands. Tell us about yourself and what you do?
My name is Corey Pieper and I’m a pop/rap artist born & raised in Milwaukee. Currently a full-time musician, songwriter, video editor AND dad! By diversifying my skill set, I’ve been able to pivot & adapt when necessary which has opened the door to many more opportunities in my industry.
Where are you based and how long have you been doing this for?
I’m currently still based in Milwaukee but do a lot of work in Houston, Atlanta & LA. I started taking things serious and decided to pursue music full time in summer of 2012.
How did you get started and what have been the key moments to progress?
I started taking music seriously when I graduated high school and met the owner of a professional recording studio. The first song we did together ended up being the runner-up in a local radio competition. This sparked a buzz and led to shooting my first music video in Hawaii with well-known videographer (also Milwaukee native) Steven Philip aka Phillyflyboy.
What do you think has been the highlight or biggest accomplishment so far?
Doing the halftime show for the Milwaukee Bucks. Best team in the league, brand new arena, 17,000 people in my hometown. The feeling was unbelievable.
Another major highlight in my career was opening for G Eazy in Honolulu. Being Hawaiian, I have an incredible amount of family throughout the islands. Visiting them while also doing one of my biggest performances to date was a monumental moment for me.
Who are the artists that you listen to/get inspiration from?
I listen to a wide variety of artists from Drake, Tory Lanez, & Post Malone to Sublime, Fiji, & J Boog. I love the energy & mood of rap music but also admire the catchy melodies & vibes of island/reggae music.
What does a day in the life of Corey Pieper?
Every day is different! Usually I’m writing music, recording, performing, writing video scripts, designing graphics, working out, being a dad/family man OR refreshing my Instagram likes!!
Where would you like to be in the next 12 months/5 years?
In the next 12 months I’d like to have a full tour under my belt, a few placements & music plaques on the wall, a condo downtown Milwaukee overlooking the skyline and...1 MILLION DOLLARS IN THE BANK WOULD ALWAYS BE NICE!
In the next 5 years I’d like to be in a position able to help certain friends & family close to me that really need it. I would also like to have some bigger investments in place on the business side of things securing my family’s future. I’d like to be more involved in movies/acting as well.
Who has had the biggest influence on your career and why?
My mother and grandfather. Growing up as a child I remember always listening to my mom singing whether it was in the house, car, or at my grandfather’s karaoke shows. Both have incredible voices and I would say played a major role in me stumbling upon this musical journey at a young age.
What is the best advice you have been given and from who?
Nobody remembers a blocked shot if you come down and dunk on them next play. Philly
What is your favorite quote?
If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.
What advice would you give to anyway who wanted to follow in your footsteps?
Be consistent & set realistic expectations. This industry is not for the weak and does not happen overnight. Be prepared to thug it out when times get tough and keep pushing. Be humble, don’t burn bridges. Be in the moment & enjoy the ride rather than only focusing on the next play. Be open minded and willing to adjust when different types of opportunities present themselves.
